The southern border of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship is at the same time the northern border of the Prešov Region, which comprises for 129,7 km of the overall length of the Polish-Slovak borderland. The Podkarpackie Voivodeship covers an area much larger than the Prešov Region (Prešovský kraj). It constitutes for 5,7% total surface area of Poland, and the Prešov Region - 18% of entire territory of Slovakia. The Podkarpackie Voivodeship is one of sixteen regions in Poland and the Prešov Region - one of eight in Slovakia. The territory of Poland is six times greater than the surface area of Slovakia, and the population - seven times more numerous.

Despite these significant differences at the country level, both areas show certain similarities, both in terms of the level of economic development, as well as culture. Characteristic for both these regions is the occurrence of large forested areas, including areas protected for their natural values.

The area of the two regions is extremely diverse. There are high mountains, hills, high grounds and plains. It is a valuable natural region. The fact entails many practices and procedures designed to protect its wildlife. Natural values of the two regions create good conditions for tourism development.

There can be both similarities and differences found between the Podkarpackie Voivodeship and the Prešov Region. To a large extent, they arise from the geographical, natural, legal, organizational, socio-political, as well as, to a certain extent, historical conditions.
